How GST is calculated
Adding GST is straightforward. Removing it is where most mistakes happen, because the tax is a percentage of the base price, not of the final price.
Adding GST
GST = Base × Rate / 100
Total = Base + GST
Removing GST
Base = Total / (1 + Rate / 100)
GST = Total − Base
To see why subtraction fails, take an item sold for ₹1,180 including 18% GST. The correct base is 1180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000. Subtracting 18% from 1,180 gives ₹967.60, which is wrong by more than ₹32, because that 18% was taken from the tax-inclusive figure rather than the base. The error grows with the rate: at 28% it is over ₹78 on a ₹1,280 sale.
The split between CGST, SGST and IGST does not change how much tax is due. A supply within a single state is divided equally between the centre and the state, so 18% appears on the invoice as 9% CGST and 9% SGST. A supply crossing state lines is charged as a single IGST line at the full 18%.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Divide by one plus the rate as a decimal, rather than subtracting the percentage. For an 18% rate, divide the inclusive price by 1.18. A price of 1,180 gives a base of 1,000 and GST of 180. Subtracting 18% instead would wrongly give 967.60, because the 18% would be taken from the larger, tax-inclusive figure.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
The total GST is the same either way; only the split differs. For a supply within one state, it is divided equally between Central GST and State GST, so 18% becomes 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. For a supply between states, the whole amount is charged as Integrated GST and later apportioned between the centre and the destination state.
What are the current GST slabs in India?
The main slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. There is also a 0% category for exempt items such as most fresh food, and special rates of 0.25% for rough precious stones and 3% for gold and other precious metals. Some goods in the 28% band additionally attract a compensation cess, which this calculator does not include.
Which GST rate applies to my product or service?
That depends on the HSN code for goods or the SAC code for services, and the rate can change when the GST Council revises it. Check the current notified rate for your specific code on the CBIC website rather than assuming, particularly for items that have moved between slabs.
Does this calculator handle compensation cess?
No. Cess applies to a limited set of goods such as cars, tobacco and aerated drinks, is levied on top of GST, and varies by item. If your product attracts cess you will need to add it separately to the figures shown here.
Is the amount I enter sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged, and no account is needed.
